After a successful weekend against Illinois State, the NIU Hockey team had hopes of bringing all that momentum to Iowa City to play a very highly skilled University of Iowa team.  The first game saw the Hawkeyes score two quick goals in the first minute of the game, but NIU stepped up to the challenge playing the Hawkeyes even for the next twenty-five minutes.  Despite showing a great effort after a horrific start the Hawkeyes were able to come away with a 8-2 victory over NIU.

The second game was expected to be a stronger showing from NIU, as they did against Illinois State the weekend before.  NIU did step up to the challenge as they only went down 1-0 after the first period.  Despite the strong play, the Hawkeyes did add on more goals and shutout the Huskies 6-0 for the victory.  Junior Defenseman, Dave Brienzo said, “In the first six games of the season we seemed to be a slow starting team, finishing out the second and third period really strong.  This weekend it was the total opposite.  There is nothing we can do about it now other than just get back to practice, and get ready for next weekend.”

Goal Scorers in game 1: Mike Strumberger and Mike Sible.

The team now travels to Madison on this homecoming weekend here at NIU, to play the University of Wisconsin - Madison, both game times at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday night.
